Plan Your Home Project With Confidence

HomeCostLab is a free resource built for homeowners who want honest, data-driven answers before they spend a single dollar on a renovation. Whether you are pricing a kitchen remodel, comparing roof replacement bids, or figuring out how much an HVAC upgrade really costs in your state, our goal is to remove the guesswork so you can budget with confidence and negotiate from a position of knowledge.

Right now the site includes 20 in-depth cost guides covering every major home improvement project — kitchens, bathrooms, roofing, siding, windows, HVAC, flooring, landscaping, and more — plus 290 expert-written money guides. Each cost guide breaks down national averages, itemized cost components, and the factors that push prices up or down, so you understand exactly where your money goes. We also offer 28 free interactive calculators that let you plug in your square footage, material preferences, and zip code to generate a personalized estimate in seconds.

What makes HomeCostLab different is our commitment to accuracy. Every estimate starts from a national baseline average for the project, drawn from publicly available data including the U.S. Census Bureau's American Housing Survey and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) employment and wage data for construction trades. We then adjust that baseline by state using publicly available labor and material cost differences, so the numbers reflect local pricing. We update figures annually — or sooner when material prices shift significantly.

We also provide state-by-state cost adjustments for all 50 states plus Washington D.C., factoring in local labor rates, material availability, permit requirements, and climate considerations. That means the estimate you see for a bathroom remodel in Texas is genuinely different from one in Massachusetts — because the real-world costs are different.

Editorial independence is core to how we operate. HomeCostLab does not accept payment from contractors or product manufacturers in exchange for favorable coverage. When we mention financing options or link to third-party services, those relationships are clearly disclosed. Our revenue comes from advertising and affiliate partnerships, but our cost data and recommendations are never influenced by those relationships.

If you are a homeowner planning your next project, start by browsing our cost guides below, run the numbers with a calculator, or explore guides for practical how-to advice and money-saving strategies.
